Wheku, meaning ‘carved face‘ depicts the face of a tipuna (ancestor). The Wheku is generally found at the apex of the gable on a Wharenui (meeting house), and symbolises an important tipuna after whom the wharenui was named. The Wheku is a representation of a powerful force or influence in our lives.
